“If it feels scary to write, then you are in the right direction.” Says my writer friend Lori.
I wanted to vomit right before I hit the Send button. Those were the scariest 550 words I have ever written. Writing and sharing it was like putting my heart on a plate in front of an unknown public.
After it was published by Plain Dealer - Ohio’s largest newspaper - on Jan. 24th, I have received an outpouring of outreach and support from people regardless of their political views, from acknowledging my courage to sharing their personal resonance, to their commitment to action - speaking up. Many commented on the layered complexity of the reflections triggered within them.
I am amazed by how many people these 550 words have touched - those same 550 words that once felt like life or death to me. I am moved by the power of a platform and freedom of speech.
This is one of the most thoughtful comments I have received, from a highly successful business executive in our community.
”Yan - I appreciate your perspective and also the manner in which it was delivered. I speak for many when I say I would like to hear more from you; not to judge or to align, but to learn. All thought is valuable, especially the thinking of those with varying/differing viewpoints. Thank you for your courage.”
Thank you for your support. All voices matter. Yours too.
Lean into fear. In that, we discover our authentic selves.
